Bible Verses About Humility

Putting others first

Humility is recognizing our true position before God and others—not thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less. The Bible consistently exalts humility and warns against pride, teaching that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Jesus Christ is our supreme example of humility, and following Him means embracing a humble heart.

What the Bible Says About Humility

Humility begins with a right understanding of who God is and who we are in relation to Him. When we grasp God's holiness, power, and majesty, we naturally become humble, recognizing our complete dependence on Him. Proverbs 22:4 connects humility with the fear of the Lord: "Humility is the fear of the LORD; its wages are riches and honor and life." True humility flows from reverencing God.

Jesus Christ perfectly embodied humility. Philippians 2:5-8 describes how Jesus, though in very nature God, humbled Himself by taking on human form and becoming obedient to death on a cross. This is the ultimate act of humility—the Creator serving His creation, the King dying for His subjects. Jesus taught, "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant" (Matthew 20:26), turning worldly values upside down.

Pride is the opposite of humility and is something God actively opposes. James 4:6 warns, "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble." Proverbs 16:18 cautions, "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." Throughout Scripture, we see pride leading to downfall—from Satan's rebellion to Nebuchadnezzar's madness to the Pharisees' rejection of Jesus. Pride blinds us to our need for God and damages our relationships with others.

Humility involves seeing ourselves accurately—neither inflating our importance nor despising ourselves. Romans 12:3 instructs us not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought, but to think with sober judgment. Humility allows us to celebrate others' successes without jealousy, admit our mistakes without shame, and serve without needing recognition. It frees us from the exhausting work of self-promotion and allows us to find security in God's love rather than in others' approval.

Key Verses on Humility

Philippians 2:3-4

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

Paul calls believers to radical humility—valuing others above ourselves and prioritizing their interests. This countercultural approach reflects Christ's mindset and transforms relationships. True humility considers others' needs before our own.

James 4:6

"But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.'"

James quotes Proverbs to emphasize God's strong stance on humility. God actively opposes the proud while showing favor to the humble. If we want God's grace and favor in our lives, we must cultivate humility.

Proverbs 11:2

"When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom."

Solomon contrasts the outcomes of pride and humility. Pride leads to shame and downfall, while humility produces wisdom. Those who are humble are teachable and open to correction, leading to greater understanding.

Micah 6:8

"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

Micah summarizes God's requirements, including walking humbly with God. Humility isn't optional but essential to pleasing God. It characterizes our relationship with Him and influences how we treat others with justice and mercy.

1 Peter 5:6

"Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time."

Peter instructs believers to actively humble themselves under God's authority. This is a choice we make, not something that happens automatically. When we humble ourselves, God promises to exalt us in His perfect timing.

Matthew 23:12

"For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

Jesus teaches a kingdom principle: self-promotion leads to humiliation, while humility leads to exaltation. God honors those who don't seek their own glory but trust Him to elevate them as He sees fit.
