What the Bible Says About Love

The greatest commandment Jesus gave us centers on love: loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and loving our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). This dual commandment encapsulates the entire law and prophets, showing that love is not merely an emotion but the very foundation of our relationship with God and others.

God's love was demonstrated most powerfully through Jesus Christ. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us, showing that God's love is not based on our worthiness but on His character (Romans 5:8). This sacrificial love sets the standard for how we are to love others—selflessly, unconditionally, and without expecting anything in return.

The Apostle Paul beautifully describes love's characteristics in 1 Corinthians 13, often called the "Love Chapter." True love is patient and kind, not envious or boastful, not proud or rude. It keeps no record of wrongs and always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres. This kind of love is only possible when we allow God's love to flow through us.

1 John 4:19

"We love because he first loved us."

John 13:34-35

Romans 8:38-39

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Paul declares the unshakeable nature of God's love for us. Nothing we do, nothing that happens to us, and no force in the universe can separate us from God's love. This assurance provides security and confidence as we navigate life's challenges.

1 John 4:7-8

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."

John establishes a direct connection between loving others and knowing God. Love is not optional for believers—it's evidence of our new birth and our relationship with God. Since God's very nature is love, those who know Him will naturally express love to others.
