What the Bible Says About Money

Jesus declared, "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money" (Matthew 6:24). Money competes for our allegiance in a way few other things do. We must consciously choose to serve God rather than allowing money to become our master.

1 Timothy 6:10 warns, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." Note that money itself isn't evil—it's the love of money that's dangerous. When we love money more than God, when we're willing to compromise integrity to get it, when we trust in wealth rather than in God, we've fallen into idolatry that leads to destruction.

The Bible consistently teaches generous giving. Proverbs 11:24-25 states, "One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed." This counterintuitive principle shows that generosity leads to blessing while stinginess leads to poverty. God delights in cheerful givers (2 Corinthians 9:7) and promises that we cannot outgive Him.

Biblical financial wisdom includes planning, saving, avoiding debt, working diligently, and living within our means. Proverbs 21:5 teaches, "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." We're to be wise stewards of what God provides, neither wasteful nor hoarding. Everything we have belongs to God, and we're managers of His resources, accountable for how we use them. When we handle money God's way, we experience both provision and peace.

Key Verses on Money

Matthew 6:24

Jesus makes clear that money demands exclusive devotion if we let it. We must consciously choose to serve God rather than money. Our financial decisions reveal which master we truly serve.

Paul warns that loving money opens the door to all kinds of evil and can even lead people away from faith. The pursuit of wealth has destroyed many who prioritized money over God and righteousness.

Hebrews 13:5

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'"

The antidote to loving money is contentment rooted in God's presence and provision. We can be content with what we have because we have God Himself, and His presence is worth more than any amount of wealth.

Proverbs 11:24-25

Solomon teaches that generosity leads to blessing while stinginess leads to poverty. This principle contradicts worldly wisdom but proves true in God's economy. When we give generously, God ensures we have enough.

Malachi 3:10

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the LORD Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it."

God invites us to test Him by tithing—giving the first tenth of our income to Him. He promises to bless faithful givers abundantly. Tithing is both obedience and an act of trust in God's provision.

Luke 12:15

"Then he said to them, 'Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.'"

Jesus warns against greed and the false belief that life consists of possessions. True life, satisfaction, and purpose aren't found in accumulation but in relationship with God and serving His kingdom.
