Bible Verses About Fear
Overcoming fear with faith
Fear is a natural human response to danger, but God repeatedly commands us not to fear because He is with us. The Bible distinguishes between the fear of the Lord (reverence and awe) and fearful anxiety about circumstances. Through faith in God's power, presence, and promises, we can overcome paralyzing fear and live in courage and peace.

What the Bible Says About Fear
The most frequent command in Scripture is some variation of "do not fear" or "do not be afraid," appearing over 300 times. This repetition reveals both how prone we are to fear and how important it is to God that we live free from its bondage. God doesn't condemn us for feeling afraid, but He invites us to bring our fears to Him and exchange them for faith.
2 Timothy 1:7 declares, "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline." Fear doesn't come from God; it contradicts the spirit of power, love, and sound mind He's given us. When fear grips us, we can recognize it as contrary to God's character and ask the Holy Spirit to replace it with His power and peace.
The antidote to fear is faith in God's character and promises. Isaiah 41:10 provides multiple reasons not to fear: "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." God's presence, His covenant relationship with us, and His promises to strengthen and help us address the root causes of fear.
Psalm 56:3 models how to respond to fear: "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." The psalmist doesn't deny feeling afraid but describes what he does when fear strikes—he chooses to trust God. Fear and faith can coexist temporarily, but as we consciously choose trust, faith grows stronger and fear's grip weakens. Perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18) because when we're secure in God's love, we no longer fear condemnation or abandonment.
Key Verses on Fear
Isaiah 41:10
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
God gives us multiple reasons not to fear: His presence with us, His identity as our God, and His promises to strengthen, help, and uphold us. When fear threatens to overwhelm us, we can rehearse these truths about God's commitment to us.
Psalm 27:1
"The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?"
David uses rhetorical questions to make his point: with God as our protector and savior, there's no logical reason to fear. God is our stronghold—a fortress that cannot be breached. When we truly grasp who God is, fear loses its power over us.
2 Timothy 1:7
"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
Paul reminds Timothy that God doesn't give a spirit of fear but of power, love, and sound mind. Fear is not from God. The Holy Spirit produces courage, love that casts out fear, and clear thinking that combats anxious thoughts.
Psalm 56:3-4
"When I am afraid, I put my trust in God. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?"
The psalmist demonstrates how to respond to fear: by choosing to trust God and praising His Word. Trust is a decision we make even when we feel afraid. As we practice this response, trust strengthens and fear diminishes.
1 John 4:18
"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."
John explains that God's perfect love eliminates fear of judgment or condemnation. When we're secure in God's love for us, we don't fear His rejection or punishment. Understanding how deeply God loves us is the ultimate cure for fear.
Joshua 1:9
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
God commands Joshua to be strong and courageous, providing the reason: God's presence with him wherever he goes. We can face any situation courageously when we remember that God goes with us and never abandons us.
